Annual exchanges with overseas friendship sister cities in Gyeongsangbuk-do

YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) started “Global Youth Culture Experience Camp” for overseas youth to “Promoting Korea.” 

 This camp was held from July 17th to 23rd with invitation of university students and high school students from overseas friendship sister cities by Gyeongsangbuk-do and was supervised by YU Department of Global Education, which has a systematic program for Korean language and culture education.

 About 50 teenagers from Ningxia, Shaanxi, Jilin, Henan, and Hunan Provinces in China, Hiroshima in Japan, and West Java in Indonesia participated in the camp. While living in the YU dormitory, they learned Korean history in Gyeongju and Andong, and experienced Korean modern culture by visiting Gumi Samsung Electronics Smart City, Cheongdo Wine Tunnel, and Pohang Homigot. In addition, they participated in various cultural experiences held at YU, such as Korean language project classes, K-pop dance learning, traditional coming-of-age ceremonies, and Korean traditional music performances, showing great response.

 Bintang Achmad Qhaissan (17), who visited Korea for the first time from West Java, Indonesia for this project, said, “The whole experience of traveling to Gyeongsangbuk-do with YU was new. I was very happy to meet foreign friends at the global camp.” Meng Jingyue (20), from Hunan, China said, “The experience of being able to directly participate in a traditional coming-of-age ceremony wearing a hanbok was truly special. This camp is not the end, I will take this memory with me for a better start and future.”

 Professor LEE Mi-hyang, head of the Department of Global Education at YU, who oversaw this camp, said, “Words and life are one. When you experience someone's life firsthand, you want to know what they say and how they live. I believe that this camp will serve as a priming water to introduce Korea and YU to young people who are still unfamiliar with Korea.”
